The girls each worked in their groups to create a 3D model of the digestive system. Each group worked hard to discuss what they would use to represent different parts of the digestive system and how they would present their project to the class.
The girls created wonderful examples and models of the digestive system. Well done to all!
Reading Buddies
We have really been enjoying taking part in reading buddies with senior infants this year. Each week our class and a senior infant class visit the library and the girls from fifth class read a book with girls from senior infants. The girls ask their reading buddy questions about the cover of the book as well as questions about what has happened in each story. We also have a reading buddy log where we write about our favourite part of the story.
December has been an excellent and fun-filled month in room 1.

The girls have created some beautiful and creative artwork this month. Take a look!
The girls painted a Christmas/winter scene using a variety of bright colours.

We have had a great start to the new year this January in room 1.
Hopes and Dreams for 2024
We discussed our hopes and dreams for this new year as a class. Each girl created three goals for 2024 and we have displayed this in our class as a reminder of what we are hoping to achieve this year!
Artwork
We have used different materials to create wonderful pieces of art this month including chalk pastels, paint and oil pastels.
We used chalk pastels to create bright and striking new year art welcoming 2024.
We explored the life of artist Vincent Van Gogh. We used paint to create our very own 'Starry Night' inspired paintings.
We have been learning all about space and the solar system this month and so we used oil pastels to create beautiful images of a galaxy or the planets.
Planet Projects
This month, we have been learning about space and so each group in the class completed a research project on a different planet from the solar system. We used the iPads to research various facts about each planet such as its atmosphere, its rotation time, its temperature, moons and many other facts. Each group created a poster of information and presented their planet to the class. It was wonderful to see the effort each group put into their presentations, they were all so creative and they knew their information so well. We all learned so much about the solar system!
St Brigid's Day
We celebrated St. Brigid's Day on Thursday 1st February. To remember St. Brigid, we created St. Brigid's crosses using card. We made our own crosses in 5th class and then also helped girls in senior infants to make their own crosses too!

We also did some reading with our reading buddies in senior infants. They had each brought in their favourite book and the girls in fifth class read this book with them. We had a great day celebrating reading and books!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge this month. The girls engaged in lots of different games as Gaeilge, participated in a 'tráth na gceist' and our céilí. 5th Class performed 'Pompeii' as Gaeilge as our song for the céilí and dance 'baint an fheir' as our dance for the céilí. Bhí an-spraoi ag gach duine, maith sibh!
American Revolution Projects and Wax Museum
We have been exploring the topic of the American Revolution in history. Each girl researched a different person who was involved in the American Revolution and created a fact-filled poster about this person. To bring our history to life, the girls in 5th class created a 'wax museum' in which they each dressed up as their person from the revolution and stood beside their projects. Classes throughout the school came to visit our museum and if they stood on button, the girls would come to life and share a fact about themselves. The girls worked so hard on these projects and had a great time displaying them for the school. Well done to all!
Weather-Science Experiment:
This month we explored the topic of weather in geography, history and science. We discussed the many different types of weather we experience and the history of weather lore also.
We then completed a group science experiment about clouds and precipitation. We used a jar with water and shaving foam (to act as the cloud). We then used a dropper to add some drops of food colouring to the 'cloud'. As we added more drops of food colouring, the colour started to drip slowly down through the shaving foam (cloud). This showed us that as the clouds get heavy with water, it will eventually fall to the earth as rain, snow etc.
Sunflowers
We each planted a sunflower seed into a small pot in the classroom. We watered the plants each day and sat them at the window so they got plenty of light! It has been wonderful watching each plant grow slowly and hopefully they continue to grow well into the summer!
